Rest after battle. The Four of Swords is the deliberate stillness in which the mind and body recover.

On the card

The stone effigy of a knight lies on a tomb inside a church, hands pressed together in prayer. Three swords hang horizontally on the wall above him and a fourth is carved along the side of the tomb beneath him. A stained-glass window shows a figure kneeling before another in a gesture of blessing. The scene is still, quiet and sheltered from the world; whatever conflict came before, it does not reach in here.

Upright

General

Stop and recover. The Four of Swords describes a necessary pause after stress, illness or conflict, a retreat into quiet to let the mind settle. Meditation, rest and solitude are the work right now. Rushing back into action before you are ready will undo whatever ground you gained.

Love & relationships

A relationship taking a breather, or time apart that lets both people think clearly. Peace in a partnership may come from simply not fighting for a while.

Career & money

A holiday, a sabbatical, or a period of low activity that should be used for planning rather than worrying. Let investments sit; this is not the moment to trade.

Reversed

General

Either the rest is over, or you cannot allow yourself to take it. Reversed, the Four of Swords shows a return to activity after recovery, or, more often, a person who keeps pushing through exhaustion until the body forces the pause. It can also mark stagnation, where rest has become avoidance.

Love & relationships

Restlessness in a relationship that has grown too quiet, or a couple who have avoided each other so long that reconnecting feels awkward. Re-engage gently.

Career & money

Burnout that will not be ignored, or a project restarting after a hiatus. If you have been resting too long, small steps back into work will rebuild momentum.

Advice

Lie down before you fall down. Recovery is not weakness; it is preparation.
