The three in the morning mind. The Nine of Swords is anxiety, guilt and the despair that grows in the dark.

On the card

A figure sits bolt upright in bed, face buried in both hands. Nine swords hang horizontally on the black wall behind, stacked one above another. The quilt is patterned with red roses and the signs of the zodiac, and carved into the base of the bed is a scene of one figure striking another. It is night, and there is no one else in the room; the torment is entirely internal.

Upright

General

Worry has taken over, and it is loudest when you are alone. The Nine of Swords describes anxiety, insomnia, guilt, regret and fears that feel enormous at night and often shrink in daylight. The suffering is real even when its causes are exaggerated. Do not carry this alone.

Love & relationships

Anxiety about a relationship, fear of abandonment, or guilt over something said or done. Talk to the person rather than to the ceiling.

Career & money

Stress that follows you home, dread about money or job security, or a mistake you cannot stop replaying. Get the facts in daylight; they are rarely as bad as the night version.

Reversed

General

The night is ending. Reversed, the Nine of Swords marks the beginning of recovery from anxiety: seeking help, gaining perspective, and discovering that the feared outcome did not arrive. It can also indicate fears that were buried rather than faced, which is why they keep coming back.

Love & relationships

Relief as a feared conversation goes better than expected, or the decision to stop punishing yourself over a past relationship.

Career & money

Stress easing, a problem that turned out to be manageable, or the choice to get support for burnout. Be honest with yourself about what still needs addressing.

Advice

Turn on the light and say the fear out loud to someone. It shrinks when spoken.
