A man lies face down on the ground with ten swords driven into his back, his red cloak spread around him. His hand rests near his face with two fingers extended, echoing the blessing of the Hierophant. The sky above is black, but along the horizon a band of yellow dawn is breaking over calm water and distant mountains. The worst has happened, and the light has already started to return.

It is over, and it ended badly. The Ten of Swords describes betrayal, collapse, total defeat and the exhaustion that follows a long struggle finally lost. There is no softening it, but there is this: ten swords is more than the job required. The excess is the sign that this ending is complete and the next thing can begin.

A painful, final breakup, a betrayal that cannot be undone, or the exhaustion of a relationship fought over too long. The dawn on the horizon is the only comfort, and it is real.
