Upright

Reversed

  • isolation
  • loneliness
  • withdrawal
  • refusing help
  • paranoia

A deliberate withdrawal to find what noise conceals. The Hermit seeks truth alone and carries a light for others who follow.

On the card

An old man in a grey hooded cloak stands on a snowy peak, head bowed, holding up a lantern in which a six-pointed star glows. His other hand grips a long staff for support on the climb. The background is nothing but sky and snow; he has left every distraction behind and carries only what illuminates the path.

Upright

General

Step back from the crowd to hear your own thinking. The Hermit describes a period of study, reflection or spiritual searching that cannot be rushed, and it may bring a mentor or make you one. What you find in solitude is what you will have to offer later.

Love & relationships

Time apart to understand what you actually want, or a partner who needs space rather than reassurance. Single people may prefer their own company for now, and that is fine.

Career & money

Research, specialist study, or a period of working quietly before you are ready to show results. Keep spending minimal; the focus is on inner value, not outer display.

Reversed

General

Solitude has curdled into isolation, or introspection has become avoidance. The reversed Hermit is either someone who has withdrawn so completely that no one can reach them, or someone who cannot bear a moment alone and never learns what they think. Reconnect, or finally take the retreat you keep postponing.

Love & relationships

Loneliness within a relationship, a partner who has shut down, or fear of intimacy disguised as independence.

Career & money

Cutting yourself off from colleagues and mentors, refusing advice, or retreating from the work altogether. Isolation is not the same as focus.

Advice

Take the time alone, and know when it is enough. Bring what you learned back down the mountain.
